Brief Description |
In 2006, the Bay Area Pollution Prevention Group (BAPPG), a subcommittee of the regional Bay Area Clean Water Agencies, initiated a regional campaign to educate and provide pharmaceutical disposal events for the public. The Safe Medicine Disposal Days campaign organized 39 collection events at participating Walgreens Drugstores, senior centers, and city halls in the 5 counties within the San Francisco Bay area during the week of May 13-21, 2006.
Because event-based collections proved expensive and may not be convenient for some residents, BAPPG project coordinators are pursuing other options, including collection bins at pharmacies and mail-back programs. In addition, the BAPPG is working to reduce regulatory barriers through state and federal level legislative efforts.
