Monroe County, Indiana
|
Brief Description |
In 2001, the Monroe County Solid Waste Management District, (MCSWMD) in partnership with a number of other governmental agencies and private organizations, initiated a pilot household pharmaceuticals collection program. The MCSWMD holds one collection event a year. An officer from the Monroe County Sheriff’s department is present at the collection events to accept controlled substances. The Sheriff’s department takes possession of and inventories the controlled substances that are turned in at the collection events. The controlled substances are then disposed of along with other drugs that have come into the possession of the Sherriff’s department.
Monroe County residents can also take non-controlled pharmaceuticals to the Solid Waste Management District’s permanent Household Hazardous Waste site during regular business hours.

Collection Site(s) |
The collection program began with senior centers and has now expanded to libraries, fire stations, and police stations in order to reach an expanded clientele. And all HHW sites serve as collection centers as well.
